What is Ugam-Chatkal National Park?
Ugam-Chatkal National Park is the ecological jewel of the Tashkent Region. Covering more than 574,000 hectares across the Western Tien Shan mountain system, this protected biosphere reserve encompasses an astonishing variety of landscapes: from rushing river canyons and cascading waterfalls to ancient walnut and relict juniper (archa) forests, alpine meadows, and sheer limestone cliffs. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it harbors rare and endangered wildlife including the elusive snow leopard, the Tien Shan brown bear, the golden eagle, and the Menzbier's marmot.
Chronicles & Story
For millennia, these mountain gorges served as migration corridors for both wildlife and ancient Silk Road caravans crossing between the Fergana Valley and the Tashkent oasis. Relict walnut and wild fruit forests in the park represent the ancestral genetic storehouse from which many domesticated apple, walnut, and apricot varieties originated worldwide. The park's deep gorges—such as the Pskem and Koksu canyons—feature petroglyphs and sacred natural pilgrimage springs revered by local mountain communities.
Who Created It and Why?
Protected by state forestry rangers, conservation biologists, and ecological inspectors to safeguard the primary water catchment basins of the Chirchiq and Akhangaran rivers and protect rare endemic Central Asian flora and fauna.
Established: Originally established in 1990 by uniting several existing nature reserves. In 2016, as part of the transnational Western Tien Shan nomination, its natural ecosystems were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list for outstanding universal biodiversity value.
Architecture & Landscape Features
A purely natural sanctuary characterized by rugged tectonic landforms. Elevation ranges from 900 meters along riverbeds to over 4,000 meters along the high Chatkal ridges. The vegetation exhibits distinct vertical zonation: mountain steppe gives way to deciduous walnut and apple woods, followed by ancient juniper forests, alpine meadows, and perennial nival glaciers.
Biodiversity & Responsible Ecotourism
Ugam-Chatkal is not merely a scenic mountain retreat; it is a globally critical sanctuary for rare Central Asian mountain ecology.
Endangered Tien Shan Wildlife
A sanctuary for the snow leopard (ilbars), Tien Shan brown bear, Central Asian lynx, Siberian ibex, and the endemic Menzbier's marmot.
